Imagine the most magical cluster of islands tucked far, far away in a secluded corner of Indonesia… Your arrival to this hidden gem requires a very stylish one: by way of the resort’s private seaplane. The moment you step onto the tropical catwalk (a.k.a. the ‘gram famous jetty), you’ll be awe-struck by the crystal-clear waters, indigo lagoons, colorful coral reefs, and lush jungle greens – and you’ll immediately forget the very long journey you took to get there. It’s a place that’s spread across 6 islands with 3 lagoons and 13 beaches. And it’s a place that actually does exist, just 160 miles north east of Singapore… It goes by the name of Bawah Reserve and it’s a sustainable luxury private island retreat that’s second to none.

Location: The Anambas Archipelago, Indonesia

Style: Sustainably Chic

Vibe: Unbuttoned Luxury

Rooms: 35 rooms & suites that offer the utmost privacy. By welcoming only 70 guests at any given time, the property feels utterly intimate and has a sense of exclusivity in the most unpretentious way possible. Choose from an otherworldly overwater bungalow, a chic bamboo-tented beachfront suite, or a safari-style tented garden suite enveloped by the lush jungle. Expect to find wonderful little touches after turndown service – special tokens from the island to take home with you… Better yet, the rooms come stocked with virtually everything necessary for the beach (beyond just sunscreen!): his-and-her sun hats, linen pareos, a straw beach bag, and more!

Spa: Open-air treatment rooms are nestled in the natural beachfront setting. The best part is daily treatments are included in your stay! There’s also an outdoor pavilion where they hold daily yoga, pilates and mediation classes. For a more personalized wellness journey, they offer in-suite treatments and private wellness classes.

Activities & Facilities: This untouched island will quickly become your playground where no detail is spared: take a glass-bottomed kayak or paddle board to the surrounding islands, snorkel with a divemaster who knows every inch of the reefs, trek through the forest with a guide who knows the best spots to watch the sun rise or set, cook with the incredible chefs, and so more! There’s a lagoon-like infinity pool, an open-air cinema, a tennis court, spa and wellness center, wine cellar, library, and a small boutique.

Dining: There are four restaurants and bars and dining is definitely a highlight here!

  • Boat House – A luxe beachside shack with singing chairs that’s great for laidback lunches. Our personal favorite!
  • Treetops – The main restaurant on a terrace that’s set under a jungle canopy. We highly recommend forgoing menus and leaving your meal in the hands of the head chef. Chef Omar creates the most memorable culinary experiences that you don’t see often... He’ll ask you what you’re in the mood for and will craft the most mouth-watering meal that will go far beyond any expectations!
  • Grouper Bar – Located by the pool, this is a great spot for a mid-day coconut or a pre-dinner aperitif.
  • Jules Verne Bar – Overlooking the treetops with panoramic views, this spot is great for sunset cocktails and light bites!

Highlights: Leave it up to Bawah’s stellar staff to put together the most special private picnic on a secluded beach. And don’t be surprised when the entire staff knows your name (even before you even land!). There’s a real focus on sustainability here and we love that Bawah Reserve is committed to giving back through community programs and initiatives.
